Trump's Plan to Rename Persian Gulf Sparks Iranian Outrage

President Donald Trump’s reported intention to rename the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf has elicited strong condemnation from Iranian officials.

Ahead of his upcoming trip to the Middle East, President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to rename the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf, a move that has provoked sharp criticism from Iran. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, described the proposed name change as indicative of ‘hostile intent’ towards Iran and its people. He emphasized the historical and internationally recognized name of the Persian Gulf, which has been in use since the 16th century.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time as U.S. and Iranian officials are set to engage in the fourth round of nuclear talks in Oman. Vice President JD Vance has stated that the U.S. aims for a ‘complete cessation’ of Iran’s nuclear program during these discussions. The name change proposal adds another layer of tension to the already complex diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Trump’s visit to the Middle East will include stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, all of which border the disputed body of water. The anticipated announcement was first reported by the Associated Press and has stirred a debate over historical and geopolitical claims to the region. Iran has historically maintained strong ties to the gulf, tracing back to the Persian Empire, while some Arab nations have pushed for the name ‘Arabian Gulf’.

The renaming has historical precedents, including a 2017 spat when Trump referred to the waterway as the Arabian Gulf, prompting a rebuke from then-Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who suggested Trump needed to ‘study geography.’ The issue of naming has also affected digital platforms, with Google Maps in the U.S. labeling the body of water as the ‘Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf),’ while Apple Maps uses only ‘Persian Gulf.’

As tensions rise, the international community watches closely to see how this issue will impact ongoing nuclear negotiations and the broader geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
