Chaotic Scenes at DOGE Hearing on Trans Athletes in Women's Sports

Witnesses Stephanie Turner and Payton McNabb faced shocking moments and political diversions during a heated DOGE subcommittee hearing on trans athletes in women’s sports.

At a recent Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee hearing titled ‘Unfair Play: Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,’ female athletes Stephanie Turner and Payton McNabb testified about their experiences with trans athletes in women’s sports. The hearing, held on May 7, 2025, in Washington, D.C., quickly descended into chaos with multiple confrontations and controversial statements.

Turner, a women’s fencer who previously refused to compete against a transgender athlete, and McNabb, a former volleyball player injured by a transgender opponent, were subjected to unexpected and disrespectful encounters. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) approached the women to express gratitude for their courage, but Turner felt this was a political move, diverting from the hearing’s main focus.

The hearing took a bizarre turn when Crockett introduced a game called ‘Trump or Trans,’ asking a witness to attribute various issues to either former President Donald Trump or transgender people. This move was criticized as an attempt to shift focus away from the protection of women’s sports.

Further tensions arose when Fatima Goss Graves, CEO of the National Women’s Law Center, suggested that preventing spiking in volleyball could prevent injuries like McNabb’s, who suffered permanent brain damage from a spike by a transgender opponent. McNabb found this suggestion ‘ridiculous,’ emphasizing that the injury was due to competing against a biological male.

Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-Cal) added to the controversy by suggesting that protecting women’s sports could lead to racial segregation, a statement Turner, a Black woman, found offensive. The hearing also saw confrontations with USA Fencing chair Damien Lehfeldt, who was pressed about his organization’s policies and his handling of Turner’s protest.

The chaotic scenes at the hearing underscored the deep divisions and strong emotions surrounding the issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports, leaving many questions unanswered and tensions unresolved.
