FEMA Acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton Removed Amid Trump's Agency Overhaul

Cameron Hamilton, the acting administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has been removed from his position amid President Donald Trump’s proposed overhaul of the agency.

Just a day after expressing his opposition to President Donald Trump’s proposal to cut or eliminate FEMA, Cameron Hamilton was informed of his ouster by Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Troy Edgar and Trump advisor Corey Lewandowski. Hamilton, who had been leading FEMA since January and previously served as a hospital corpsman with SEAL Team 8 in the U.S. Navy, was replaced by David Richardson, who is now serving as the Senior Official Performing the duties of the FEMA Administrator.

Hamilton’s removal comes in the wake of Trump’s visit to North Carolina in January, where he oversaw the state’s recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene and announced plans to fundamentally reform or possibly eliminate FEMA. Trump stated, “I think, frankly, FEMA is not good,” during his visit, signaling his intent to overhaul the agency responsible for disaster relief efforts.

The news of Hamilton’s departure has sparked discussions among lawmakers, with Representatives Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) and Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) teaming up to push for FEMA’s independence. Hamilton had cautioned against eliminating the agency, stating to the House Committee on Appropriations, “I do not believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency.”

As the debate over FEMA’s future continues, the agency’s leadership transition marks a significant development in the ongoing discussions about the role and effectiveness of federal emergency management in the United States.
