Trump Administration Nears Trade Deal with China After Productive Talks

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced progress in trade negotiations between the Trump administration and China, following productive talks in Switzerland.

In a significant development in U.S.-China trade relations, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that the Trump administration is close to finalizing a trade deal with China. The announcement came after a series of productive talks held in Switzerland over the weekend, involving key figures such as Vice Premier and two vice ministers from China, alongside U.S. representatives including Bessent and Ambassador Jamieson Greer.

Bessent, speaking to the media on Sunday, emphasized the constructive nature of the discussions, stating, “We will be giving details tomorrow. But I can tell you that the talks were productive.” He confirmed that both he and Ambassador Greer had updated President Trump on the progress, indicating full presidential awareness and support for the ongoing negotiations.

The talks come in the wake of heightened tensions, with the Trump administration imposing tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese goods in an effort to address the chronic U.S. trade deficit. China retaliated with tariffs of its own, including a 125% duty on U.S. goods, escalating the trade war. However, President Trump’s recent post on Truth Social suggested a positive shift, describing the negotiations as a “total reset” achieved in a “friendly, but constructive, manner.”

This development follows a separate trade agreement with the UK, signed last week, which Trump hailed as a move towards greater reciprocity and fairness in international trade. As the U.S. continues to navigate its trade relationships globally, the potential deal with China represents a crucial step towards easing tensions and fostering economic cooperation between the two superpowers.
