Trump Administration Firm on 'Zero Enrichment' Policy in Iran Nuclear Talks

As President Donald Trump prepares for a trip to the Middle East, the U.S. continues to demand a ‘zero enrichment’ policy in ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran.

JERUSALEM — In the most recent developments from the fourth round of nuclear negotiations held in Oman, the Trump administration has reiterated its staunch position against allowing Iran to enrich uranium. This stance comes as part of broader talks aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear weapons program, a critical issue as President Trump gears up for a Middle East visit.

The negotiations, described as both ‘difficult but useful’ by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, have seen indirect and direct discussions. A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, mentioned an agreement to continue technical discussions in future meetings, signaling a cautious optimism about moving forward.

President Trump has set a 60-day deadline to reach an agreement, underscoring the urgency of dismantling Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities. This demand for ‘zero enrichment’ is a direct challenge to Iran’s efforts to preserve its nuclear program, which it insists is for peaceful purposes.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s recent public support for anti-American sentiments and criticism of Israel adds layers of complexity to the negotiations. Despite these challenges, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff emphasized the non-negotiable nature of the ‘zero enrichment’ policy, rejecting any deal similar to the 2015 JCPOA that allowed for uranium enrichment under certain conditions.

The ongoing talks are crucial not only for nuclear non-proliferation but also for regional stability, as Iran’s nuclear ambitions continue to be a flashpoint in Middle Eastern geopolitics. Both sides appear committed to continuing the dialogue, though significant hurdles remain in reaching a consensus that aligns with the Trump administration’s stringent demands.
